Put a checklist in an email

5 October 2026 · searched as insert checkbox in email

A list of things to do reads better with boxes beside it. MailCode has a checklist next to bullets and numbers: click a box and the item is ticked and struck through, and the recipient sees the boxes as you sent them.

How to do it

  1. In the composer, click ☑≡ in the format bar — beside the bullet and number buttons — or right-click in the text ▸ ☑ Checklist.
  2. Type the items, one per line. Press Enter on an empty item to end the list.
  3. Click an item’s box to tick it: it turns to ☑, and the item is struck through in grey. Click again to untick.
  4. Click ☑≡ inside a checklist to turn it back into bullets.

The boxes are ordinary characters, so every mail program shows them — but the recipient cannot tick them in their copy. Replying to a mail with a checklist, you can tick its items in the quote of your reply, which is a quick way to answer “done, done, not yet”.
